What is Domino Theory?

The Concept
In all harsh times, people believe that there is no way out and that times will only get tougher. From worldwide financial recession; Communist war movements; stories; natural disasters, etc, there is always some people that believe "this'll never get better, unless we stop it"
Domino Theory is like this, many people believe to stop a problem, you must look at what you're faced with, take a chunk out of something (or into something), then stop the fall. Like in domino's, if you push one down, all come toppling down. But if you remove a few from the sequence, the domino will hit the floor; thus keeping all other domino's standing. Which in turn, stops the collisions that are creating the disasters.
Where This is Used
Domino Theory was first brought into the public viewing when the Cold War began. Many Presidents within the Cold War believed the threat of Communism to none Communist countries was contagious, and once passed on to one, would spread to all.
Contemplating this was mad for Americans and many Presidents believe it was their duty to defend the world from Communist advances. This is why most of the later wars were fought in Asia against Communist stricken countries.
In Korea, the Americans moved in so that they'd stop the threat of Communism moving from one side to the other, then to places such as Laos, Cambodia and others. In Vietnam, the only reason the went in was to stop Vietnam from turning Communist, thus taking the infected Communism domino theory and spreading it throughout the Asian countries.
RECESSION TERMS:
With recession comes bailouts and with the EU comes loans. In the EU, many believe Domino Theory will occur soon, with Greece's domino wobbling and many other financially stricken countries starting to feel the floor shake, many assume that the banks will be over-flooded when the world economy goes bust.
The EU said the first-stone in domino theory was in Greece, and if Greece's economy fails then they're doomed to all fail. If this is true, then obviously it'll spread onto other countries that're indeed supplying the European countries.
SOCIAL USES:
In many inner-cities and other places of low-income, domino theory is suggested to be a plausible cause for the cities failure. Take for example the town of Gateshead, a suburb of Newcastle in Britain - once a booming inner-city with many jobs, once you lose revenue and customers over the bigger stores, they shut down. This brings unemployment which in-turn leads to hospitably and thieving. It also leads to more people on the dole, which can lead to higher younger pregnancies. This all has a bad factor on migration to the suburb, which in turn creates less jobs and less shops opening - meaning many of the unemployed will indeed, stay unemployed. As you can see, once one stone falls, they all do - I'd say Gateshead can still prosper, but at the current government cut-back and the fact it'll need a good few million spent on it; I cannot see it happening, any time soon.
ENVIRONMENTAL USES:
In the Amazon there is more trees than anywhere in the world; it creates a large amount of our oxygen supply and it's waters are condensed into purification devices, which go to water fields and in the cities water supplies around the North of South America. Since the early 1900's the Amazon has had major deforestation - which is where logging communities chop down trees, without planting more or giving a damn about anything other than profit. This has major effects on the world we see today, for one, we'll not have as much oxygen in 100 years if we keep it up at this rate (if the Earth survives another 100 years); the farming communities of South-America will be hit dry once the water from the trees natural rainforests is gone, which in turn may dry up the Amazon's amazing rivers. Like in all uses, domino theory did start with one stone and is now toppling fast - although many people are trying to hold back the stones, nobody is trying to remove them. If you could take the 2 stones that look like they're about to fall out of the equation, you'll be left with no tumbling domino's!
That's quite enough uses - you get my point: domino theory is used a lot in society and in politics. Although many politicians dispute domino theory as being "make believe" and that domino theory is rubbish and things and things can bounce back without any sort of work (which oddly makes me think of bouncy balls)
To finish off, if you hear Domino Theory any more, you need no longer wonder what in god's name domino's have to do with the oil rigs in Saudi Arabia, or whatever natural resource we're exploiting to the good of the people.

Nice description of the Domino Theory. Through my life I have seen a few of these Scenarios that you mention and somehow or other, I feel mostly by good luck rather than good management, the world seems to recover just enough to lurch into another Domino train wreck :-)

What an outstanding hub! I have learned at last, what the domino theory is and what it means. Thank you so much. Just a great hub. I voted up and all over the place!
