The Gateshead Sage

What is the Sage?

The Sage is a centre for music education - talent performances - drama and media. It was opened in 2004 as part of the Quayside development project.

It was created by Foster and Partners, who received around £70m in National Lottery and other donation funds to create the Sage. The funding also went towards start up promotion.

Gateshead Sage -
Gateshead Quays, The Sage Gateshead (S-bound), Gateshead NE8, UK

Where? Who? Why?

The Sage is located on the South bank of the River Tyne, next to Gateshead's inner-city. It is linked as part of the 'renovation' of the Quayside - with the BALTIC and Millennium Bridge in this renovation too.

Many acts; performers; events and even marriages have happened at the Sage, it is truly a centre for the whole community. Within the Sage there are three stages - a 1,700 seater performance hall, normally used for larger events - a 400 seater hall, for small plays or practices - and a smaller hall again for amateur events.

All three halls are separated quite well, to give each hall enough room to not be heard from outside. The wall has been layered to stop noise getting out the hall.

The Sage was made from the renovation project - to try and brighten up the Gateshead/Newcastle Quayside. While it did cause controversy at the start, for being "just for a niche market", it has quickly become a well used facility; like the BATLIC. Many school use this facility for days out, or to test performances.

An interesting topic for a HubPage. I have visited this building and it is amazing to see it in real life. I know that some of the locals have a unflattering nickname name for it but it is nice to see something this innovative. The nearby gallery is worth a visit too.

We spotted that last year when we took a wrong turn and ended up in the middle of Newcastle. An amazing building!

Out of Newcastle. We were on our way from Gateshead to the Northumberland coast and intended to skip central Newcastle. We failed. :-)

That is an amazing looking building, and a neat thing to write a hub about. I bet it is better in person like you say.

Oh yes, it is. If you ever find yourself in the North East it's a must see.
