The BALTIC Art Gallery

The BALTIC is one of the finest pieces of contemporary art in the North East. The building is on the Gateshead side of the Quayside, close to the Millennium Bridge. Inside the building is an ever changing Art Gallery, the largest in the North East and a pioneer in art galleries throughout England. In the BALTIC there have been around one thousand different artists' designs, ranging from full-room-design to a small A5 painting/design.

Past

In the 1930's, this glorious leader of contemporary art and design was a boring old Hovis mill - it was closed in 1981, to be left, dying in the awe of a new North East. One without high industrial flow and a more moderator commercial seafront. The mill wasn't demolished because the Tyneside Council had seen an opportunity for tourism through this, as the BALTIC wasn't the only mill on the seafront - the mills had turned into local landmarks.

In the 1990's, Dominic Williams won the competition to reinvent the mill as something to do with art. After £50m of investment and ten years of construction and redevelopment, the BALTIC art gallery was opened. Saturday the 13th 2002 was the official opening of the BALTIC. The BALTIC generated 35,000 views on it's first week and still attracts around 7,500 views per week.

Art

The BALTIC always has bundles of creative art. The best of art have turned up here, to present their work to the masses. The BALTIC has large areas, allowing the artists to create whatever comes to mind. With some artists, it only takes a few tiny abundances of wire or pipe or chocolate or anything else that comes to mind, but for others, it takes the whole room.

The BALTIC specialises in contemporary art, which means there is not a lot of paintings, more trashcans and other crazy items. This allows viewers to see a 3D art image.

Turner Prize

With the BALTIC being the centre for art within the UK, it's no surprise to see the Turner Prize turning up in 2012. The Turner Prize is one of the most prestigious awards for artists around the globe, and many flock to win this. For a few weeks, the BALTIC will host the entries, with the winner being decided at the end of the hosting.

Really nicely written article. I like to visit art galleries and see lots of different kinds of art. It would be interesting to see the entries for the Turner Prize.
