Jesse Owens and Hitler at the 1936 Olympics

Before WWII, the Nazi were hiding their atrocities in Germany from the world. They'd already begun concentration camps around the Germany lands and started Jewish massacres, but somehow hid all this, in climax of Olympic tourists.

In 1936, three years from the largest war in the world, Germany, under Nazi rule, hosted the Olympics in Berlin. It was a Nazi fuelled event, with Nazi salutes coming from all races in the events. The real reason for the Olympics was to showcase the Aryan Race's skills and genetics, and how more advanced they were than the other races.

This backfired when Jesse Owens, a 23 year old African-American took four gold medals in the 100m; 200m; 4x100m relay; long jump - showing his impressive skills. The Olympics is often remembered for the incident after he won the various medals, when Hitler illegibly snubbed Owens on his wins, by not applauding him when winning.

But, this is completely wrong! Hitler did not snub Owens, and in fact, Hitler did enjoy Jesse Owens wins, waving and smiling at him after the award ceremony. The reason why Hitler did not applaud him is because he was asked to either applaud all the athlete's or none, Hitler chose to applaud none, on the second day.

Jesse Owens did say he was not "snubbed" by Hitler, quoting: "When I passed the Chancellor, he arouse, waved his hand at me, and I waved back at him, Hitler didn't snub me." - the real convict of snobbery was actually his own President at the time: Franklin D. Roosevelt. He didn't send Jesse Owens even so much as a telegram, congratulating the athlete on the four gold medals wins! Once he came back to America, he wasn't even invited to the White House, to shake hands with the President!

True snubbery! Of course, I'm not claiming Hitler is this nice man now, but I'm just clearing up a rumour in History to what many people believe is true.

nice to see the historical facts being used. It has being well known years that Hitler admired Owens, Even Owens knew that . I suppose it just suits the establishment to paint everything in black and white without grey areas,, They will trivialize the smallest historical facts in order to suit them. I always welcome Critical thinking and It is nice to see it here

Thanks! I uncovered this while doing a little piece on Hitler's background and found he admired Jesse Owens accomplishments. I thought it to be a tad odd, if he'd snubbed him, yet admired him. So I dug deeper and found this out!

Very interesting hub. I heard a couple of years ago that the snubbing of Jesse Owens was not correct but never followed it up. I was really glad to see this hub and read the true account. As to Jesse not even getting a telegram from his president - that sucks!

Many thanks for sharing + voted up!

Yep, he even stated that the President snubbed him and not Hitler, but how history is turned. Thanks for the vote :-)
