12 Great Start-Apps for new iPhone Users

There are many apps on the Apps Store, and for some new users, it's very hard to find any that aren't corrupt with unneeded ads, bugs, glitches or, quite simply, dull and boring. Since almost anyone can create an app, many are unattended to; leaving them unmoderated and outdated. Saying that, there are some treasures in the store, and I intend to share mine with you.

I must state, not all of these applications are free, but they do cover the cost in quality, unlike some on the market. They're also not too expensive, I believe the modest buyer will be okay with the prices.

Photo Taking & Editing

There are two brilliant apps which I've used for a while now. The first is a '360 photo' application, which, well, allows you to take photos at a 360 image.

1. 360 Panorama

Like I said before, this application allows you to take and view pictures at a 360 view. It's quite a remarkable application, but steady hands are needed to work it properly.

You simply do a 360 shot of your chosen place, whether it be public or home, then take various pictures at different angles, while standing on the same spot; then the image converts into a 360 picture. These images can only be viewed within the Panorama album, as the software is incompatible with the Apple photo-album, for now.

It is quite a fun application, for any age, it's also not one that costs a great deal...if it even costs anything now. I believe it was $2 at the most when I purchased it. I would advise you to purchase this, I cannot think of why anyone wouldn't like photography, it's a brilliant way to waste time and you gain better knowledge of photo taking.

2. Snapseed

This is the best editing software I've found on the market. Better than the Photoshop app. It allows you to edit the picture with many different functions, brightness, contrast, cropping, frames and different styles of image, like black & white. It's a great tool if you're looking to set the mood on a picture, say if you're taking one of the Eiffel Tower, you may put a 'vintage' touch on.

3. Catch Up Apps

There is catch-up TV, there's catch-up online and now there's catch-up applications. I don't know about US TV, but for English TV you've got 4oD Catch Up, BBC iPlayer, ITV player and Sky Go. I'm guessing the US iPhone's and other countries will have their versions of catch up applications on the apps store - since England have three channels on.

These applications are for anyone who watches TV, so, they're for everyone. You can pick which channels you really want to watch, and can watch almost every new episodes of your favourite show on demand. There's millions of shows to watch and even other channels within the applications. I know ITV1 has ITV2, 3 and 4 on it's application.

The best thing about catch-up apps is you can watch them anywhere when you have connection. You don't have to be plugged in or on charge. The apps do take up a good amount of your battery life, so I wouldn't advise watching endless amounts of Celebrity Juice then awaiting orders from your boss.

4. Flipboard

The Flipboard application creates a application which works with both world news, specific news and your news. It provides your social updates and topical updates, meaning you can read what all your friends are posting on Facebook, then return to read an article on the latest technology, sport, art, or any other topic.

While this application is not completely unique to the Apps Store, its certainly the best in it's category, and the most updated. The app also has quite a large menagerie of topics which you can ponder on. The good thing about this application is it doesn't have any hyper-links, you stay on Flipboard even when clicking a topic; you don't get sent to some shabby website.

Very good for anyone that just likes a quick read and likes to keep everything in one place - this cannot be a replacement for big users of Twitter or Facebook, I'd suggest downloading their actual app if you love those social websites. I would also say if you're a big news reader you download the specific newspaper you normally read, although I wouldn't advise getting it from the Newsstand.

5. Momento

This is a diary/journal of all your experiences - you can write in here, like a diary, and add social feeds. This particular diary application is great because it has a Calendar with it and allows 'tags' to be set. You can also import your social contacts (i.e. Facebook), to see what statuses you put on that day.

The diary acts as a reminder as well, you can set dates when you completed a task and you can add moments. For example, you could set 'family holiday' as a moment two weeks into the future.

It's a brilliant tool for anyone who uses their iPhone quite a bit. The app is a diary, journal and reminder all in one and allows one to look back at previous days, weeks and years of their lives. The app never re-updates itself, thus destroying your data. It comes at the low costs of $2, which is cheap for diary apps.

6. Sleep Talk

This is an ingenious entertainment application, which allows you to monitor and record yourself, while sleeping. If you're a talker, snorer or afraid the paranormal is watching you, this application is most certainly for you. While it provides great entertainment; if not for you, then for your family and friends, it has another use, it can also show you what you're doing in your sleep, if you're restless throughout the night.

The application can only be set if it's on the background. You can lock your iPhone with this on, but you cannot play games then lock it. Before you set it, make sure you're ready for bed - it doesn't stop and if you don't have it on in the background it won't work.

Great application and truly worth every penny, I don't even think it costs $1.

Never Ending Games

These are arcade games which can go on forever, provided you're skilled enough to keep going. Games which normally involve small amounts of differentiation, but more quicker pace the further you go up, and more adapt skill to get passed the enemies/barriers. Here are my three favourites:

7. Doodle Jump

One of the biggest games ever to hit the Apps store market, one of the most successful applications of all time in many critics mind. This app is not only available on iPhone, but on Samsung, HTC and other smart phones.

The concept of this game is the Doodler has to get passed seemingly endless objects and monsters, to get to higher ground. There's no real story - it's a full on arcade fun game, like Pacman.

While some say it's not enjoyable, almost nobody can say it's not addictive, many have been taken by its brilliant arcade(ness) and have tried again and again to achieve a high score.

For the very cheap price of $0.69, it's a bargain. Sorry if the estimate is wrong, I work on UK price. If you're new to the game, perhaps my tips will help you get straight onto the leaderboards.

8. Temple Run

This is a brilliant little arcade game, which involves you running endlessly running away from evil black monkeys, who chased you out a cave. The only problem is, you're on an endless yellow path which is covered in traps and gaps. You must get passed these gaps, while gaining more speed. You gain currency (coins) and can spend this on new adventurers, better equipment or power-ups.

While nothing is known of the adventurers, other than they're all getting lost in some tunnel and that the monkeys chasing them are relentless, I would say this is good for the arcade feel.

It's a brilliant arcade game and works on many levels of arcade gaming. It provides a similar approach to Doodle Jump, it gives you a small but ever growing amount of enemies and barriers; it gives you one straight path that isn't altered and you have the same basic format in all your attempts on high scores.

You need to get this! It's free too.

9. Fruit Ninja

My favourite and most adored game, mainly because my blog gets huge amounts of traffic per day on it. The game is straight forward, you slice the fruit and gain points per slice. There are different levels: classical, zen and arcade.

In classical, you fight your way through harder hordes of fruit. In zen, you must chop as much fruit and get as many combos as possible within the allotted time. In arcade, you must get score within the minute, using banana's and combos to help your score.

Everyone loves an interactive game with the touch-screen, and I think Fruit Ninja hits this perfectly. Who doesn't like chopping evil, corrupt flying fruit as well? And all for the simple under the $1 price.

10. Calorie Counter

This calorie counter is the best on the market. It has everything you need to get in shape and gives you expert advise on how to do this. The app provides you with a diary to store information, medical notes, progress charts, social networks and check-ups.

While there are many on the market, nothing comes to your needs as well as this diet app. Its amazing and very well updated and moderated. The app has searches for matching products, with calorie searches and quantity updates. It also has water intakes and cardio intake.

You also get progress charts, not just on your weight, but on specific parts of your body - to show how much you've gained/lost. The application takes in every bit of your diet and gives your rules of how much you can eat and how much exercise.

Brilliant and well worth the download since it's free. A must have for anyone trying to diet - it's like having a consultant for free and without any hard work.

11. SoundCloud

I got this application for free while the '12 Apps for Christmas' was on. I've loved it ever since, a brilliant provider for finding the right song, creating albums, finding what's hot in the world and playing playlists.

Like an iTunes and Music combined, SoundCloud can also work out songs on the radio through a recording then assessment process. You can hum songs to find them out, which ends the reign of not finding out what song was on the radio that one time.

Very powerful and well updated application, which runs very smoothly. Like I said, I got it for free on the free app day, I think it costs around $3-4, worth it if you're a big music fan.

12. Pages

Basically Word in your pocket, Pages creates quite good documents where you can upload information, charts and photos. You can make your page as informal or formal as you want; it's for anyone.

If you can make these documents compatible with your computer, you could print off your work, so if you're still in school you may be able to do homework on your iPhone.

The best document and writing station in the whole market, it'll cost you quite a lot, at $7, but it's worth it if you can spare that much money.

That's my 12 Best Start-Apps for new iPhone Users, hope you enjoyed!
