David Guetta

While many criticise the French megastar for "selling out", I believe that his success just shows how much of a brilliant house artist and producer he is, and that his success is what he wanted. He still creates great music, whether with top-name singers or by himself.

David Guetta worked his way from the clubs in France, where the house age was really starting to get big. In the early 90's, he finally started making tracks and making his own music - which gained him creditability with the world of DJ's. By 1994, he owned a club and was playing at multiple ones.

He kept growing around France and soon was known worldwide as a good house producer. But it was not until the late 2000's that he really gained the success he dreamed of. When 'Love is Gone' was released, that was the first time the world really heard Guetta. Over 500,000 copies sold and it was featured on Beatport and on the Dance-Billboard.

He was voted best house DJ 2008 and gained #3 in the DJ Mag. After this, his mainstream success really kicked off. With the release of 'One Love', many tracks were in the Top 100, 40, 20, 10 of many charts, including: 'When Love Takes Over', 'Sexy Bitch', 'Memories' and 'Getting Over You'. The album received good reviews and Guetta won a lot of awards for it.

Now, he is one of the most wanted producers on the planet, and is the #1 DJ according to DJ Mag. He has released songs that have topped worldwide charts and worked with some of the biggest names in many genres of music.

David Guetta's main style is electro-house, although he does differ into modern-dance and hip house. Normally depending on the singer.

Avicii

Unlike David Guetta, Avicii isn't a mainstream success - yet. He came into most eyes with his very successful track, Levels, which has been remixed by Skrillex and Flo Rida.

Avicii started DJing and remixing at 18, he joined Strike Recordings and from there met top names, such as Tiesto, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso. In 2010 he released 'Seek Bromance' and 'Bromance', under the name Tim Berg.

After 'Seek Bromance' was recognised by many record companies and charts, he was signed with EMI. Around this time he started going to Ministry of Sound, to showcase his music. He has released music on their albums. His record 'Penguin' has had two remixes, one from Leona Lewis and the other with Andreas Moe.

Levels was when everyone found out who Avicii was, despite Flo Rida releasing his cover two weeks before Avicii's. The track hit #1 in many charts and was named Top House Track 2011.

Avicii is now one of the most prominent house producers in the world - he headlines Tomorrowland and Ultra Music Festival. His main type of house is electro.

Swedish House Mafia

I could of put all three on, as they're all great house artists, but since they've been a team they've been releasing a lot more tracks as a group and not as a single DJ, it'd be a bit silly.

Swedish House Mafia formed in 2008, after Axwell met the other two DJ's. They joined to make their music better, and to have better insight in their music (3 views are better than 1).

For two years, they worked with other artist and built up their reputation as one of the best house bands around. SHM worked with Laidback Luke on a few tracks, before going into their own album.

'Until One' was their first individual album, with the album came the two tracks that made them global house-stars: One and Miami 2 Ibiza. Miami 2 Ibiza was remixed by Tinie Tempah, and hit #4 in the UK.

The next album, named 'One Night Stand' will be released sometime in 2012. The tracks 'Save the World' and 'Antidote - with Knife Party' are to be put on the album.

Swedish House Mafia have headlined Summerburst, Tomorrowland, EDC, Creamfields and Ultra Music Festival in the past - this is sure to continue. SHM's do not conform to any category of house, instead they use the genre itself and confine to the genres barriers, instead of a sub-genre.

Daft Punk

This duo needs no introduction, as one of the biggest electronic bands ever. Even though they haven't made a new album in over 10 years, Daft Punk are still noted to be one of the main reasons House is still around today, and without Daft Punk we may not have heard some of these DJ's.

Like Kraftwerk are to electronic music, Daft Punk are to house. Without them, there wouldn't of been a rise in popularity for house. In the 1990's, when house was becoming prominent in clubs and in the charts, Daft Punk came with their robot helmets and live pyramid.

After failing in their careers as typical rock n' roll singers, they aspired to be a new electronic band. Homework was their first major album under the name Daft Punk, it consisted of many different electronic styles, although house was the main. They were praised for their innovation in electronic music.

They then created Discovery, which had tracks still remembered today, including: 'One More Time', 'Aerodynamic' and 'Harder Better Faster Stronger'. This was said to be more conclusive with the style they were looking for, a more electro-funk-house.

Human After All was their third album, which featured 'Technologic' and 'Robot Rock'. This album had more of an electronic-rock vibe to it. This was said to be what Daft Punk were looking to make, even though it received mixed reviews.

After the third album, they've went quiet. Apart from the music on Tron, Daft Punk projects have been silent. Let's hope they're brewing something.

Other Notable House Names

  • Afrojack - Probably most known for his track with Pitbull & Ne-Yo, 'Give Me Everything'. Afrojack is a progressive-dutch house artist. He owns the label 'Wall Recordings', where Sidney Samson works.
  • Fedde Le Grand - Known more for a dance type of genre, Fedde has been working for 4-5 years on tracks and covering the world in tours and gigs. With his euro-dance/house style, he's never a miss.
  • Laidback Luke - He's worked very hard throughout his career to secure good ties with some top DJ's, like David Guetta, SHM & Daft Punk. His most noted song would have to be 'Turbulence', with Steve Aoki & Lil John.
  • Steve Aoki - Steve has worked with many top stars, mixing tracks for their songs. He is a regular at Tomorrowland, where he's played 4 years in a row.
